A Retro RPG for the Vectrex!

Welcome to the Goblin Valley. You find your scaled-self here in search of your Dearest Knight who was kidnapped by the Evil Troll Sorcerer. It is well known that trolls never like to see anyone be happy, but this time they messed with the wrong dragon! The Sorcerer's tower is sealed with three magic locks. The keys to which are kept by as many monstrous guardians that must be defeated.

Ah, the mysterious and powerful Vectrex. Enchanting you with its flickering beams and buzzing speakers, it is unlike any home video game system before or since, and she is the mother of my first officially completed game, Quartz's Quest.

I wanted to capture the feel of games like Dark Tower on the Vectrex and Dragon Stomper on the Atari 2600. Both primitive open world RPGs in their own way. QQ features non-linear progression, turn based combat with different types of enemies based on the environment, elemetnal breath attack weaknesses and resistances, randomly placed treasure, and a selection of random dungeon layouts. I would have included completely randomized dungeons, but the machine only has 800 bytes of RAM to work with!

There are two versions of the game: The free version can be played on Itch using the widget above and the cartridge version, published by Vector Republic, which has updated graphics, fine tuned enemies, title screen music, and more!

The title was drawn by Rick Parsons. Fun fact: just one of these screenshots is a bigger file than the game itself! But this doesn't mean it feels small on the inside!
